Crystal Snowflakes

I saw this idea on Pinterest and definitely had to try it with the kids.  This is super easy......but takes some patience, which is somewhat hard for kids!

Ingredients:
Pipe Cleaners
Borax (1/3 cup per jar) (you can find this in the laundry aisle)
Pint Mason jars
Boiling Water
String / Yarn
Pencil

Form your pipe cleaner into a snowflake shape (or whatever shape you desire).

Add bowling water to your mason jar.  Mix in borax.....stir it, but it doesn't have to be completely dissolved.  Attach your pipe cleaner shape to the string and hang it from the pencil while submerging it in your jar.

Now, let it set over night (ours set for about 24 hours).

They were soooo excited to see the snowflakes!  I wish I could have gotten a picture of the look on their faces when I pulled it out of the water.....they were in aahh!

The pictures don't do it justice......they really do look like crystals and they sparkle!!!

This is what was left over in the bottom of the jars......just break up the bottom with a fork.  This would be fun to play with in a sensory tub or hide in sand and look for diamonds.
Oh, and if you are worried about never using Borax again.....trust me, you will use it.  I have several different recipes like slime and silly putty that uses Borax.....you can even use it for it's intended purpose on your laundry too.
