Homemade Sidewalk Chalk

I saw this idea to make homemade sidewalk chalk on Pinterest.....here is the site I got it from.  I thought it would be fun to make and I had a ton of Plaster of Paris leftover, so a perfect project to use some of it up.  The kids were very excited to see how it was going to turn out.

You start out by recycling some toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls......line them with a piece of wax paper and tape one end with packing tape or duct tape.

Now it's time to mix up the plaster of paris and water......if you want exact measurements, check out the site above......we just poured and stirred until it was the right consistency.....not too thick and not to runny.  Then added washable tempera paint.....the more you add, the darker the chalk will be.  I let each child pick their choice of color and they got to stir it together.  Make sure you use disposable bowls and spoons because the mixture will harden fast.

Then pour into your molds.....make sure you tap the sides to get the air bubbles out and let dry.  The site said that it took 3 days, ours took about 3 hours.....by the afternoon we were able to draw with the chalk.

The tops were a bit funky, but once you start drawing with it, it smoothed out.....some of the kids were worried about breaking off some of the chalk!

They had a blast with their "new" chalk!  I think next time....if there is a next time....we may try two colors in one tube and they can then draw with either end.

I don't think this chalk is cheaper by any means, but it was fun to make and it's fun for the kids to have their own big chalk to draw with.
