We've talked this week about where apples come from.....thankfully no one said from the store!!! They all knew that apples grow on trees! We read several books about apples and sang quite a few apple songs (will post their favorite tomorrow). So, to end our theme we made apple pie!
I made the crust ahead of time, but they wanted to help roll it out.....well, some of them did. You could buy your crust too, but I think homemade is way better and it really isn't too difficult to make!
We used my Pampered Chef Apple Peeler / Corer / Slicer to cut the apples. They all thought that was pretty cool. They were all snitching apples as we cut them.....I think I will have to get this out more often!
Some of the skin was still on the apples, but we left it......then just cut in half and they are ready to go.....so much faster than doing it by hand and the nice part is the kids can help!
When I make apple pie, I use a few tablespoons of flour and add some sugar (the amount depends on the type of apple you use or how sweet you want it). Stir together and put in your crust.
Brush some milk on the top crust and sprinkle with sugar.....that's the way my grandma used to do it. We also made 2 pies cause if your makin' one, it's just as easy to make two!! And I figured my hubby might want some pie too!!!
If you don't have these fancy rings from Pampered Chef, you can cut foil to put around the edges of your crust so your crust doesn't burn. And no, I am not getting paid by Pampered Chef to use their products (although it would be nice).....I just have a bunch of their tools and love them. But if you are interested.....Connie Weber is a consultant and can help you out!!!
Here is our final product!
We haven't eaten any yet cause they were way too hot and it was almost lunch time, so the kids decided they wanted it for their afternoon snack. I will update with the pictures of the kids eating their pie later and what they thought of it.
Update: here are the pictures of the kids eating the apple pie.....about half of them liked it, the other half.....not so much.
B enjoyed it!!! |
D wouldn't even try it.....she wanted the crust off, but then never ate it! |
What a face......she did actually like it though! |
