Lava Lamps

I have some fun activities planned throughout the summer.......not so much crafts (well maybe a few), but more projects and just fun stuff to do outside.  And this weather we are having is perfect for it.  Today we made lava lamps (totally forgot about blogging about our field trip last week, so will post pictures on that another time).  Anyway, here is what you will need......water, oil, empty bottle (could even use a jar......just depends how careful you think your children will be), alka seltzer (generic works just fine), and food coloring.

Fill bottle a little over half way with oil.

Then remaining bottle with water......don't fill all the way to the top.

Then add 10 drops of food coloring......a few of the children put 5 of each color to make another color......red and yellow to make orange.  I did have one that put red and green and it turned the water brown, but some of the specks are still red and green.

Then break an alka seltzer tablet into 4s and drop one at a time into the bottle.  Make sure it stops fizzing before you add another or it gets too cloudy.

Put the lid on and watch it......can turn it upside down and rock it back and forth......I don't recommend shaking it, gets a little cloudy.

Aren't these fun??!!!!!  Not sure how long they will last, but fun nonetheless!  I think I may experiment and put a glowstick in one for a nightlight or fun at night outside.......or even break one open and poor some in......may try on our next camping trip!

Do you have summer activities planned with your kiddos??  We have our list and checking them off as we go.  Also have several field trips planned.....heading to Botanica Gardens in Wichita tomorrow!
