Tortilla Snowflakes

Yesterday we made a fun and easy snack.  We cut tortillas to look like snowflakes.....fold a tortilla in half and then in half again (we used the taco sized ones, but if they are bigger, you could fold a few more times).  Microwave the tortillas a bit to soften them so they don't break when folding.

Then I gave the children clean scissors and let them cut shapes in their tortilla......I had to help some with this part.

Then spray with Pam or brush with melted butter and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes until they are golden brown.

They were a definite hit!  I have made these just in triangles with a fruit salsa.....yum!

Snow Scene

This morning, we made a snow scene......all you need is glue, salt and construction paper.  We looked at some ideas in books of what a snow scene is or what you can make with snow and then I gave the children glue bottles and let them create whatever they wanted.  Once they were done with the glue, we sprinkled it with salt, shook off the excess and let them dry.

As you can see, everyone's idea of a snow scene was different.  I like to do activities that all produce a similar project, but it's also fun to do some very abstract projects like these that let children be creative and create what they want.

Snowmen

The next few weeks we will be talking about Winter and hibernation.  So, today we made snowmen.  This takes a little prep work ahead of time.....first, cut out the middle of a paper plate.....this will be the body, then cut a circle for the head or you could also use a small paper plate, a black top hat, a carrot nose and then whatever you have laying around for the eyes and mouth.....we used small black pom poms for the eyes and black beads for the mouth.  I stapled the head to the body and let the children decorate it.

When done, take a ziploc sandwich baggy and add sugar, salt, flour, or glitter and tape to the back side so it shows through the circle cut out.  Add a yarn scarf and you are done.  The middle is supposed to be kind of like a snowglobe or resemble the snow.....we used sugar and added a little glitter to it.

I think they look pretty darn cute!  Ev and Coop both decided their hats should be on the side!

Snow!

Well we made it back from Disney World and oh my word, we had FUN (the kids are already asking when we are going again)!!!!  If you ever get the chance to take your kids......do it!  It was a trip we will never forget and if we do, well we can look at the thousands of pictures I took.....no joke!  Every now and then I will do some posts about our trip.....just too much to put in one post.

Today was the first day back to school for my kids.  I have had all my daycare kids back since Christmas, but this has been the first day back without the school kids.  Since it snowed, I thought we would take advantage and do some activities with the snow......we first made some snow ice cream.

Here's what you need:
2/3 cup milk
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups clean snow
Mix it up and serve immediately......it melts pretty fast, so have your ingredients ready to go.

I gave them the option of sprinkles too!

Cooper was not a fan of it!

After our snow ice cream, we bundled up and headed outside!  I wish I would have had enough squirt bottles for everyone, but we used what I had on hand.  I filled them with water and added some food coloring and let them squirt the snow.  Since I didn't have enough, I gave the other children markers and they colored the snow with them.  They all did great taking turns and of course we had to fill the bottles several times!  Not everyone had boots, so we stood by the curb so their feet would stay dry!

Next time, I will not give them yellow!
